PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorber, varying the damping force in spite of a simple structure, and manufactured inexpensively. SOLUTION: This shock absorber 1 is provided with a piston 20 disposed to freely move forward and backward in a casing 10. The device includes: a casing side permanent magnet 31 provided in the casing 10; a piston side permanent magnet 28 provided on the piston 20 to exhibit shock absorbing force by the action of magnetic field acting in a space up to the casing side permanent magnet 31 according to the forward and backward movement of the piston 20; an elastic member 26 provided on the piston 20 to form a fluid passage 41 serving as an orifice for passing a fluid 40 in the casing 40 in a space up to the casing side permanent magnet 31; and an orifice variable magnetic member 27 for expanding and contracting the elastic member 26 to come close to and separate from the casing side permanent magnet 31 by the action of magnetic field depending on a change in relative position between the piston side permanent magnet 28 and the casing side permanent magnet 31 to thereby vary the passage area of the orifice 41.
