PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing carbon fiber in a short time and in high carbonization rate from a thermoplastic carbon precursor. SOLUTION: The method for producing the carbon fiber comprises the following process: After forming a precursor fiber from the thermoplastic carbon precursor, the precursor fiber is heat-treated until the rate of radical extinction is greater than the rate of radical formation to form a stabilized precursor fiber followed by carbonizing or graphitizing the stabilized precursor fiber.
