The present invention provides an electrochemically active material resulting from substituting a portion of the nickel in a combined nickel and lithium oxide of the LiNiO<SUB>2 </SUB>type that crystallizes into a rhombohedral structure and that satisfies the formula: <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>Li (Ni<SUB>(1-x-y-z-t)</SUB>Co<SUB>x</SUB>Mn<SUB>y</SUB>Li<SUB>z</SUB>M<SUB>t</SUB>)O<SUB>2-e</SUB>F<SUB>e </SUB><?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> where: 0<=x<0.70 0.05<y<=0.50 0<=z<=0.20 0<=t<=0.30 0.01<e<=0.50 0.20<=(1-x-y-z-t) and in which M is at least one element from Mg, Al, B, Ti, Si, Zr, Fe, Zn, and Cu.
