In a method of false-twist crimping of glass yarn, a protective lubricant, e.g. a high molecular weight polyalkylene glycol, is applied to the tensioned yarn between a zone in which the twist is heat-set, e.g. at 1100 DEG F, and a cooling zone preceding the false-twister. On the downstream side of the twister, the untwisted or untwisting yarn, passing (through advancing nip rollers also serving as a twist-stop or directly) to a wind-up package, may be treated with a stiffening agent or size, e.g. sodium alginate, polyvinyl alcohol, paraffin wax, and/or heated. The latter treatment may dry or set the agent, or the remanent tension in relaxed yarn may be sufficient, to hold or retain the crimp as a latent property which may be released at a later, e.g. finished fabric, stage.
|
