A solid crystalline copolymer of propylene with a linear 1-olefine having 5 to 18 carbon atoms, said copolymer containing from 2 to 40% by weight of linear 1-olefine monomer units is prepared by polymerizing in the presence of a stereospecific catalyst which is a transition metal compound in which the metal is in a lower than normal valency state, e.g. TiCl3, activated with an aluminium alkyl compound. Preferably, the copolymer is obtained in the form of a free-flowing slurry by initially polymerizing propylene in the absence of comonomer under conditions in which it will form a free-flowing slurry, preferably until 0.5-1.0% by weight of the final copolymer yield has been formed. In the examples, propylene is copolymerized with octene-1, pentene-1 and octadecene-1 using a catalyst comprising aluminium diethyl chloride and titanium trichloride, the latter being obtained by reacting titanium tetrachloride with ethyl aluminium sesquichloride.
|
