A washing machine for detecting a current running to a motor that generates a rotation drive power for washing, rinsing and dewatering, vector-controlling the motor based on the detected current, and determining the weight of washing. The washing machine is characterized by generating by a motor a rotation drive power for washing, rinsing and dewatering (S1), detecting a current running to this motor by a current detecting means (S4), torque-controlling a torque generated by the motor based on the detected current so that a torque is optimum for each of at least washing and dewatering operations, or speed- controlling the rotation speed of the motor based on a current detected by the current detecting means (S5), and determining the weight of the washing in the rotary tub based on the magnitude of a torque current during a motor rotation speed varying time (S6-S10).
