<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal alignment layer by which a liquid crystal display device having high contrast, a high voltage retention ratio and low residual DC voltage can be manufactured, and to provide its manufacturing method. <P>SOLUTION: In the method of manufacturing the liquid crystal alignment layer, a liquid crystal and a compound which has a group having an ethylenic unsaturated bond and a hydrophobic group are encapsulated between two substrates where a film of a polyamic acid and polyimide is interposed on the surfaces in contact with the liquid crystal of the substrates. The compound is then irradiated with a radiation or heated to be polymerized on the polyamic acid or the polyimide film.
