Butene oligomers are obtained by contacting liquid C4 hydrocarbon fractions containing isobutene and n-butene with a sulphonated cation exchange resin and then recycling a part of the reaction mixture or the whole or part of the C4 fraction contained in said mixture. Temperatures of 20-130 DEG C., pressure of 15 atmospheres gauge and reaction times of 5 mins-.3 hours are specified. A list of suitable resins is given.
