The sonic horn(10) has a working face(22) with one or more rows of closely spaced studs(24) facing the workpieces to be joined. Free ends(26) of the studs which make contact with the workpieces are tapered inwards. Stud(24) height is greater than the workpiece wall thickness, but less than the total wall thickness of both workpieces to be joined. Stud spacing in a row is less than stud height. Two or more rows of studs are arranged parallel to each other and row spacing is greater than the spacing of adjacent projections in the same row. Studs have either a slim pyramid shape or truncated pyramid shape with a square or rectangular base. On truncated pyramids the truncated face is either flat or has the form of a low pointed pyramid. An independent claim is included for an arrangement of sonic horns comprising two or more sonic horns positioned closely adjacent to each other on a common adapter coupled to an ultrasonic source. |
