It is intended to provide an apparatus for culturing an organism, in which a pooled culture medium is not directly in contact with a tissue under culture, comprising the culture medium and a water-absorptive microporous material partly immersed in the culture medium, or a medium connected to the microporous material which is partly in contact with the culture medium and capable of supplying the culture medium to the microporous material, wherein the culture medium is allowed to migrate upward via holes in the microporous material and thus supplied to the tissue or cells of an organism placed on the surface of the microporous material to thereby culture the tissue or the cells; and a method of culturing an organism using the apparatus.
