METHOD OF PREPARING ZIRCONIUM CHLORIDE AQUEOUS SOLUTION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of preparing a zirconium chloride aqueous solution in which the content of a silica portion is reduced to a low level in a shorter time than that in a conventional method from an alkali treated material of zircon sand. SOLUTION: The method of preparing the zirconium chloride aqueous solution comprises the following steps: (1) a step 1 for obtaining a water exuded cake by exuding the alkali treated material of the zircon sand with water and filtering; (2) a step 2 for obtaining a dry intermediate body by drying a gelated material obtained by adding hydrochloric acid into the water exuded cake or by spray-drying a slurry obtained by adding hydrochloric acid into the water exuded cake before gelation; (3) a step 3 for obtaining a suspension by adding hydrochloric acid into the dry intermediate body so that the concentration of zirconium chloride in the liquid phase of the resultant suspension becomes 5-16 mass% expressed in terms of ZrO2and the concentration of free HCl becomes 1-10 mass% and (4) a step 4 for obtaining the zirconium chloride aqueous solution by filtering the suspension.
