PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a condensing optical system which is formed suitably for a side-looking optical system constituted so as to scan point images of light on a subject surface by swinging a point source of light and can satisfactorily suppress various aberrations, and to provide an optical system for confocal observation, which is provided with the condensing optical system and has a wide scanning range secured, in spite of the small size. SOLUTION: The condensing optical system is mounted on the scanning confocal optical system which moves a point light source functioning as a pinhole for confocal observation, scans a luminous flux from the point light source, and thereby, observes the subject surface. The condensing optical system comprises a first group having a positive power, a deflection group containing at least one deflection member, a second group having a positive power and a cover glass, in this order, from the point light source. The condensing optical system is constituted so that at least the interval between the second group and the cover glass is changed, and thereby, the condensing position is changed along the optical axis direction of the condensing optical system.
