The invention relates to devices for processing sheet material, e.g. banknotes. In order to be able to operate the processing device in a particularly safe manner while keeping the probability of jams and breakdowns low, a deflecting mechanism that is located in the path of conveyance comprises means for conveying also low-quality sheets between deflection elements of said deflecting mechanism without causing jams while the position of the sheets in the path of conveyance is monitored only once said sheets have run through an orienting apparatus.
