摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a shaped beam generating device which efficiently converts and shapes a light beam having nonaxisymmetric cross-sectional beam power distribution into a beam having axisymmetric fundamental Gaussian mode distribution, in a small-sized device and stably from a structural viewpoint, by using a saturation nonlinear medium without using an optics of a complicated configuration. <P>SOLUTION: Nonaxisymmetric distribution can be converted and shaped into axisymmetric Gaussian distribution by using a small-size saturation nonlinear beam shaping element which makes use of optically nonlinear properties of a space soliton stably present in a saturation nonlinear medium space, without using a complicated optics. This solves the following problem: when a beam shows a high degree of nonaxisymmetry in the distribution of light intensity on a cross section perpendicular to the propagation axis, such as a flat output beam from a semiconductor laser or a slab type solid laser light, the beam can not be shaped into a beam with axisymmetric fundamental Gaussian mode by a normal optical system such as a spherical lens; and therefore, a complicated and bulky optics is required to shape the above type of an exiting beam into a beam with axisymmetric fundamental Gaussian distribution. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p>
