The invention relates to the preparation of compounds of the formula <FORM:1029750/C2/1> in which X1 and X2, which may be the same or different, denote fluorine or chlorine atoms, by brominating the corresponding unbrominated compounds, preferably by direct bromination in acetic acid solution. Examples describe the preparation of 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dibromophenyl) - 1,1,3,3 - tetrafluoro - 1,3 - dichloropropane and 2,2 - bis - (4 hydroxy - 3,5 - dibromophenyl) - 1,1,1,3,3,3 - hexafluoropropane.
