PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent occurrence of bandings, without being influenced by the speed fluctuations of image carrier. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus comprises a latent image forming means for forming an electrostatic latent image on the image carrier, a developing means for developing the electrostatic latent image on a toner image, a transfer means for transferring the toner image to an intermediate transfer body, and a cleaning blade, separated from and contacted on the intermediate transfer body and for removing toner left on the intermediate transfer body. The thickness of the cleaning blade is equal to or larger than the transfer nip width, the cleaning blade is separated into a non-image region on the intermediate transfer body, and the non-image region forms the latent image by the latent image forming means during transfer part passage.
