[Also in Division G5] A process for producing a pattern in a matrix, comprises producing a homogeneous mixture of magnetic metallic particles in a dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene, causing said particles to arrange themselves in a desired pattern by submitting the mixture, while in a plastic state, to a magnetic field of force having the required pattern, and causing the polytetrafluoroethylene dispersion to solidify, by heat treatment, while the particles retain their desired pattern, whereby said particles are fixed in that pattern within a matrix of solid polytetrafluoroethylene. Either a permanent magnet or an electromagnet is used to provide the magnetic field and one or both of the polepieces are shaped to give the desired pattern of magnetic particles; star-shaped and ring-shaped patterns are referred to. The mixture can contain coloured fluorescent or phosphorescent particles. Decorated articles such as containers or signs can be produced by the method. |
