There is provided a mobile terminal device which considers a key input operation interval when inputting a character and pronounces the corresponding sound of an input character which has been held when an operation interval exceeds a predetermined time or when input of a different character is started, thereby pronouncing only the character to be checked by a user. In this device, when another character is continuously inputted by the same key input within a predetermined time, a character selection decision unit (201) updates the storage content of a current candidate storage unit (202) and outputs the updated candidate character as a display character to a display control unit (204) so as to be displayed on a liquid crystal display unit (103). In this case, no sound is reproduced for the candidate character displayed. When a predetermined time has elapsed without key input, the character selection decision unit (201) reads out the current candidate character stored in the current candidate storage unit (202), pronounces it as a confirmed character, outputs it to a judgment unit (206), and causes a sound reproduction unit (105) to reproduce the sound corresponding to the confirmed character by using a sound synthesis unit (207).
