PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an energy absorbing member for an automobile frame made of an aluminum alloy, which energy absorbing member can achieve excellent energy absorbing ability and is light-weighted by being deformed in the bellows shape deformation pattern such that an average load per unit weight increases when a compressive load is applied thereto. SOLUTION: The energy absorbing member is composed of a thermally refined heat treatment type aluminum alloy hollow shape material. The hollow shape material has a square or rectangular cross sectional shape having one hollow portion. The thickness of its wall is larger than 2 mm. The cross sectional area except the hollow portion is at least 350 mm<SP>2</SP>. The following relationships are satisfied; 0<R/a≤0.2, t/a≤0.2, R/a<5×(t/a)-0.37, where "a" shows an average length of respective sides in the cross section of the hollow shape material, R shows a radius of a corner portion, and t shows an average thickness of the respective sides.
