PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide scintillator compositions particularly useful for detection ofγrays and X-rays under various conditions. SOLUTION: Scintillator materials based on certain kinds of halide-lanthanide matrix materials are described. In one practicing embodiment, the matrix material contains a lanthanide halides mixture, that is, a solid solution of at least two kinds of halides, for example, lanthanum chloride and lanthanum bromide. In another practicing embodiment, the matrix material is based on lanthanum iodide alone, which must not contain substantially lanthanum oxyiodide. The scintillator materials may be a single crystalline form or a polycrystalline form, and include an activator, for example, cerium for the matrix material.
