The present invention relates to a polysaccharide of plants belonging to the Panax family, a method for extracting the same and a pharmaceutical composition containing the same as an active ingredient. The polysaccharide in accordance with the present invention can be easily extracted from plants belonging to the Panax family and exhibits excellent effects for treatments and prevention of obesity-causing diseases by lowering of body fat. In addition, when extracting a polysaccharide from leaves or stems of plants belonging to the Panax family, it is possible to prepare a polysaccharide at very low production cost, thus being advantageous from economical point of view. Further, since plants belonging to the Panax family have been used as the raw material of medicines for a long period of time, general problems associated with use thereof as medicines, including toxicity can be naturally solved.
