<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical switch having small thickness, wherein contrast of transmitted light and cut-off light is secured. <P>SOLUTION: The optical switch is constituted of at least a magnetic head layer and a transparent ZnO magnetic layer having residual magnetization higher in the vertical direction of a film surface than that in an in-plane direction of the film. The direction of an axis C of a crystal of the transparent ZnO magnetic layer is preferably perpendicular to the film surface and the transparent ZnO magnetic layer is manufactured by an epitaxial growth method or by applying an intense magnetic field perpendicularly to a substrate surface when the layer is formed. When switching is performed, if the coercive force of the transparent ZnO magnetic layer is reduced by additionally irradiating the transparent ZnO magnetic layer with a laser beam, making the magnetic layer absorb the laser beam and heating the magnetic layer, magnetization change can be generated by using less current and power-saving, miniaturization and lightweight can be achieved. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
