The invention concerns a novel paper-,cardboard- or pulp board-based material, exhibiting enhanced flame or fire resistance, said material being in the form of an entangled or entwined matrix, containing at least 50 wt. % of cellulose and at least 5 wt. % of borax. Said matrix comprises borax-cellulose complexes (1) consisting of cellulose fibers, whereon or wherein are provided borax crystals. Borax (2), not associated with the fibers, is also present in the matrix, said borax (2) containing borax in its original form, in a naturally crystallized form or in its commercial form, or borax crystals (3) and/or intermediate borax (4), having been subjected to crystallization during the production process.
