The method for allocating data elements to a set of carriers for transmission involves deciding which number of the elements has to be allocated to a carrier of the carrier set. The signal to noise ratio is measured for the carrier and used to form a required SNR per data element table which defines the required noise ratio per data element allocated to the carrier. The set of carriers is divided into N subsets of carriers according to a predetermined carrier criterion. The subsets form an adaptable portion of the carrier set. Each subset has an associated an associated required SNR per data element table. Each data element is classified in one out of N groups of data elements according to a predetermined data criterion before it is allocated to the carrier. There is a relationship between the data criterion and the carrier criterion on the basis of which each data element group is associated with a subset of carriers in such a way that a data element, classified in the group, is allocated to a carrier forming part of the subset associated with the group.
