It is intended to provide a method whereby harmful substances (dioxins, pyrenes, etc.) in the atmosphere or generated during smoking can be effectively removed by using DNA and a filter for removing the harmful substances. More specifically, a method of removing harmful substances characterized by comprising bringing a gas containing the harmful substances into contact with DNA and capturing the harmful substances by the DNA to thereby remove the same; and a filter for removing harmful substances characterized by comprising at least DNA and a support member for holding the DNA.
