<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize an image forming apparatus, such as a printer, copying machine, or facsimile, while facilitating attachment/detachment of an image carrier and an intermediate transfer body. <P>SOLUTION: When an image forming unit 96 is detached from an image forming apparatus 10, the opening/closing cover 16 of the main body 12 of the image forming apparatus 10 is turned around a turning support point 14, thereby uncovering the top of the main body 12 of the image forming apparatus. In the image forming unit 96, an intermediate transfer device 62 and an image carrier 50 are disposed between a fixing device 90 and a rotary developing unit 38. The image forming unit 96 is detached from the main body 12 of the image forming apparatus obliquely forward (obliquely left upward in Figure) through a space between the fixing device 90 and the rotary developing unit 38.
