<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extremely reduce a memory consumption capacity required for file management information, such as file reference ID to validly and efficiently use a memory area, and to simultaneously provide the file management method of an IC card for shortening the time required for file retrieval, and for executing efficient processing and the IC card. <P>SOLUTION: This file management method of an IC card is provided to divide a memory area into a plurality of parts, to assign each file to each memory area, and to execute the data management of each file. In this case, the file is constituted of file management information for managing file ID, data size, data start address, file attributes and access conditions or the like and file data for storing data.
