PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent recording operation without attachment or with wrong attachment and enable suitable operation control by acquiring information on a plurality of ink cartridges from memory elements provided therein. SOLUTION: A memory element 18 is provided for a recording head 15 which discharge an ink on a recording medium, and memory elements 21a-21d are provided for four ink cartridges 2a-2d. To these memory elements 18, 21a-21d, are commonly connected signal cables 16a-16c, enabling information communication to a CPU 10 by two-way communication. The memory elements 21a-21d for the ink cartridges 2a-2d send information on the type of inks contained therein to the CPU 10, and the memory element 18 for the recording head 15 sends information such as an ink cartridge attachment history to the CPU 10.
