Disclosed is an electrode active material which mainly contains a metal borate complex and exhibits good charge/discharge characteristics. Also disclosed is a method for producing such an electrode active material. The electrode active material mainly contains an amorphous metal complex represented by the general formula: M2-2xB2xO3. In the formula, M represents one or more metal elements selected from transition metals such as Fe or V, and x satisfying 0 < x < 1 may, for example, be 1/2. Such an electrode active material can be produced by converting a metal complex represented by the general formula: M2-2xB2xO3 into an amorphous state by mechanical milling. The electrode active material can also be produced by solidifying a mixture, which contains an oxide including M as a constituent metal element and a boron oxide, from the molten state by quenching. |
