PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely eliminate ink on a carrying belt, and to enhance productivity. SOLUTION: Liquid-repellent treatment is applied to the belt 38 for carrying a recording medium (recording paper 16), and ejection (pre-ejection) of the ink is performed toward a belt surface from each recording head 12 in the recovery operation of the recording head 12. In this case, control for making the ink from the recording head 12 reach almost the same place on the belt 38 is performed. This enables the ink of each color to be united on the belt 38 and coagulated together. The united and coagulated ink is rotatively driven with the belt 38, carried up to a belt turning position 38a so as to free-fall in the belt turning position, and removed from the belt surface.
