PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable displacement vane pump for reducing sliding resistance between a vane and the inner peripheral face of a cam ring while securing the jump of the vane out of a suction region. SOLUTION: The variable displacement vane pump for varying the displacement of a pump chamber with the rocking of the cam ring, the vane, a rotor having a vane slit for storing the vane to be set in and out, and a side plate provided for sandwiching the rotor. A vane back pressure groove annularly provided on the side plate is partitioned into an inlet side vane back pressure groove corresponding to the suction region and a delivery side vane back pressure region corresponding to a discharge region with a partition part. Suction pressure is guided into the suction side vane back pressure groove, while discharge pressure is guided into the delivery side vane back pressure groove. Each of the vane back pressure grooves is communicated with a slit groove base end portion formed between the base end of the vane and the vane slit, and the slit groove base end portion, when located at the partition part, is communicated with both sides of the suction side vane back pressure groove and the delivery side vane back pressure groove.
