PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the precision of sensing the amount of laundry by sensing an optimal physical volume which changes depending on the amount of laundry in a rotary drum when the rotary drum is rotated in a washing machine which senses the amount of laundry in the rotary drum having a rotational axis in an approximately horizontal direction or an approximately tilted direction. SOLUTION: The rotary drum having the rotational shaft 4 in the approximately horizontal direction or the approximately tilted direction is occluded by a water receiving tub which is elastically supported by the washing machine main body. The rotary drum is driven by a motor 5, and power is fed to the motor 5 by an inverter 29. The torque of the motor 5 is sensed by a torque sensing means 30, and the driving of the motor 5 is controlled by controlling switching elements 29a to 29f of the inverter 29 by inputting a signal from the torque detecting means 30 to the controlling means 23. The controlling means 23 senses the amount of laundry in the rotary drum by the signal from the torque sensing means 30 when the rotary drum is raised to a first specified number of revolution.
