An image display device for enabling the viewer to views a virtual image of the object to be displayed by projecting light onto a retina of the viewer. The display of an image by the image display to the viewer is controlled in consideration of the movement of the viewer. The display device comprises (a) a head-worn unit (40) worn around the head of the viewer and adapted for displaying a virtual image of the display object on an image display region by modulating emitted light and directing the modulated light to a retina of the viewer through an output opening and (b) a waist-worn unit (50) for controlling the light emitting section and the modulating section so as to display an image on the image display region. The waist-worn unit (50) relatively detects the movement of the viewer (for example, the movement of the viewer's head) in relation to the position of the viewer (for example, the position of the viewer's waist) and at least either turns on/off the image display or changes the display position.
