The invention provides a method of determining predisposition towards atherosclerosis and other vessel diseases, e.g. other cerebrovascular or cardiovascular diseases which involves determining the genotype of a human or non-human mammalian subject for at least one Fc receptor and identifying whether the determined genotype signifies or corresponds to a positive or negative disposition towards said disease. Methods of prognosis are also provided. A preferred Fc receptor genotype to be determined in accordance with the methods of the invention is the FcgammaRIIIA receptor.
