CPU REGISTER DIAGNOSTIC TEST

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide fault-tolerance of digital arithmetic processing in a CPU.

SOLUTION: A method for compiling a program is executed on a target central processing unit (CPU). The method comprises scheduling of a CPU register diagnostic test depending on the situation (508). The method can include use of a default positivity level in the scheduling of the register diagnostic test (508). The diagnostic test that is scheduled can include writing known data in the register (702), reading data from the register (704), and comparing the known data with the read data (706). When the result of the comparison shows that they are different, the test can be jumped to a fault handler routine (710).
