<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of an optical fiber which is capable of increasing the net working rate of a stretching unit and enhancing productivity, and a stretching unit of a glass preform using for the method. <P>SOLUTION: In this stretching unit 7 of a glass preform 5, two stretching chucks 27, 28 are equipped locating at different distances in the stretching direction on the stretching line 8, and they alternatively grasp the glass preform 5 and continuously stretch it and, at the same time, the stretched preform 5 is cut at a specified range of its length from the top when the preform reached the length by a cutting device 9 connected to the underside stretching chuck 27.
