PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect a short remaining service life of a discharge lamp 3, in advance, and to prevent output degradation and operation stop of the discharge lamp 3 to secure safe operation. SOLUTION: This luminaire is equipped with an inverter circuit 2 for converting a D.C. power source 1 to high-frequency power; and the discharge lamp 3 driven by being supplied with the high-frequency power. In addition, the luminaire is provided, in the inverter circuit 2, with a lamp electrical quantity detecting part 4 for detecting an electric quantity in stably lighting the discharge lamp 3 for each predetermined time interval, and a control part 5 for comparing the variation of the electrical quantity with a set value, showing a preset variation of the electric quantity in the stable operation range of the discharge lamp 3; and is provided with an annunciation part 6 for annunciating that a remaining service life of the discharge lamp 3 is short, when the comparison result showing that the variation is larger than the set value is obtained in the control part 5.
