PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the monodispersibility, the infrared ray screening property and the conductivity in a zinc oxide based particle at the same time. SOLUTION: The manufacturing method is carried out by heating a solution (S) containing a Zn compound and a compound of a metal (Md) to become 3-valent and/or 4-valent so that the ratio of the number of atoms of Md to the number of atoms of the total metallic components of Zn and Md is 0.1-20% to deposit the zinc oxide based particle containing Zn and Md as the metallic components and exhibiting zinc oxide crystallinity in X-ray diffraction. The solution (S) contains a compound of a 1- or 2-valent metal element Ma in the range of 0.00001≤Ma/Md<1 in the atomic ratio (Ma/Md) of Ma in the Ma compound to Md in a Md compound contained in the solution (S). The solution (S) contains a monocarboxylic acid compound≥1.90 times and≤8 times of Zn by mole and alcohol 1-30 times of the Zn compound expressed in terms of zinc oxide by weight.
