A method of gluing veneers and for repairing cracks in veneers by application to the veneers of a moisture softenable unbacked adhesive foil comprises applying a moisture medium suitable for softening the surface of the adhesive foil to the veneers prior to the application of the adhesive foil and bonding of the veneers. The foil may be a hide glue. Foils of low viscosity glutin glue may be moistened with water while foils of higher viscosity glue may be moistened with a solution of peptizing substance, such as sodium α-naphthalene sulphonate in water or an adhesive consisting of polyvinyl ethers or natural rubber. The foil and veneer may be pre-heated and an aqueous formaldehyde solution may be added to the moistening medium to assist hardening out of the softened foil. A coating may be applied to the veneers after joining to prevent complete drying out and a brittle bond, the coating being a thin film of glycerine and water. |
