The hydraulic clutch has two coupling blocks (30,34), with their clutch surfaces (36,38) pressed together. Cartridge valves (40,44) give the hydraulic link between the blocks, with their end openings at the clutch surfaces. A pressure switch unit (116) acts on the control chamber (110) of the cartridge valve (40) at the input side to increase or relieve the pressure. When the chamber is under pressure, it overcomes the force of a spring (106) so that it remains closed. On pressure relief, the spring force is asserted to overcome the pressure in the valve chamber (134), so that the valve (44) at the output side is opened or remains open.
