An inquired destination A determines an argument .alpha. every time an inqui ry received, cuts out part of stored electronic information C a, measures its attribute, and forms a information C a, measures its attribute, and forms characteristic information I A, for transmission to an inquiring source B along with the argument .alpha.; while the inquiring source cuts out the same part, as cut out by the inquired destination, of electronic information C b stored by itself by applying the augment .alpha., forms characteristic information I B in the same way as done by the inquired destination, and checks it against the characteristic information I A received from the identity between the tw o elements of electronic information C a, C b. Therefore, the above method can provide a high-reliability checking result by transmitting a very small amount of information without transmitting the contents of the electronic information at all.
