Flux mixture 7 being extruded on to a welding rod or wire 6 by a piston 13 is subjected to vibration by an ultrasonic vibrator 1. The latter is connected to a horn 2 extending into a flow guide 8 mounted in a hard rubber bush 9 in an end of the extrusion cylinder. In an alternative apparatus (Fig. 3, not shown), the horn 2 extends axially of the extrusion cylinder.
