ULTRASOUND COUPLING MEDIUM FOR USE IN MEDICAL DIAGNOSTICS

The invention relates to an ultrasound coupling medium for use in medical diagnostics, which consists of a structure gel containing a matrix from PVA, guar or a mixture thereof. The novel coupling medium is preferably semiliquid and can be extruded to an up to 1/10 mm thick film which withstands pressures of up to 30 kp without tearing. The medium adapts itself exactly to the surface of the skin without forming substantial air pockets. Even when the skin is covered with hair, the novel coupling medium does not form substantial air pockets between the medium and the transmitter or the skin. Already a few seconds after the novel medium has been removed from the skin, the skin no longer feels wet and the medium can be removed from skin and hair without leaving residues. The novel coupling medium will keep at least one year and meets the requirements with respect to induction of allergies or dermatitis.
