The invention relates to a method for monitoring messages for initiation of multimedia flow exchange sessions, whereby said messages are transmitted in packet mode via a monitoring server through a network between a transmitting terminal and at least one receiving terminal. Said method comprises a step of estimating (50) a transmission rate value for at least one initiation packet, received by the monitoring server, a step of comparing (52) said value to a maximal authorised transmission rate value and a step of enabling (40) transmission of the initiation packet, only if the transmission rate value for said packet does not exceed the maximal authorised transmission rate value. Optionally, the estimated transmission rate value is a mean value which is measured on a sliding time window. Said invention also relates to a server and an installation for carrying out the inventive method.
