The invention relates to a circuit arrangement, for switching a laser diode (10) on and off, with control of the illumination power in the switched-on state for the laser diode (10). A control loop for a laser diode, overcoming disadvantages, comprises isolating or switching off the control loop on switching off the laser diode (10), as no light is incident on the monitor diode which is optically coupled to the laser diode. On each renewed switching on of the laser diode the regulating circuit must be toggled on anew. The circuit arrangement (5) thus comprises at least one laser diode (10) and a regulation device, which controls the luminous power of the laser diode (10) when switched on and regulates an output idle current below the threshold current of the laser diode (10) in the switched off state.
