The invention relates to a method and system for detecting the presence of a mobile terminal, which is used to inform an application server as to whether or not a mobile subscriber is present on a mobile telecommunication network. The inventive method comprises: at least one first step (29, 35) whereby a distinctive signal, such as an SMS, is sent from the mobile subscriber to the mobile telecommunication network; and at least one second step (28, 32) whereby a present or absent binary state is determined according to the reaction of the mobile telecommunication network to the signal.
