A slave radio station ( 14 ) establishes communication with a master radio station ( 20 ) by transmitting a signal (H, J, K) intermittently, listening for a response (L), and saving power by deactivating its transmitter and receiver at other times. When the master radio station responds the slave station may synchronise periods of receiver activation with a beacon signal (B) transmitted periodically by the master station and may cease transmission of the intermittent signal.
