Apparatus for promoting angiogenesis, comprises a body formed of a biocompatible material and being dimensionally adapted for implantation within tissue of a muscle, wherein said body provides at least one surface which causes blood pooling adjacent to said body to thereby stimulate angiogenesis; wherein said body comprises a flexible structure (42); and said flexible structure comprises a flat metal strand, rolled to form a spring with a closed pitch component (44) and an open pitch component (48) that has edges (52) that are angulated.
