A 'thief' type sampling device for light alloy melts, has a rod (2) which is in sliding engagement with a sheath(1). The rod is preferably of circular section and has a number of transverse, open bores (4); the sheath has a corresponding pattern of holes. Relative movement, by rotation or axial sliding, is used to open or close the sampling rod bores, to allow ingress or retention of melt. An independent claim is included for the sampling procedure using the device.
