A solar thermal tile 1 has a transparent portion 2 and a chassis 6. The transparent portion permits sunlight to heat a space below the solar tile, and the chassis has at least one protrusion 16,18, that overlaps an adjacent tile when both tiles are mounted. The chassis may include a non-transparent material, which may be a metal such as a folded sheet metal, or a plastic such as a moulded plastics material. The transparent portion may have peripheral edges, and may be formed from a polycarbonate sheet material. The solar thermal tile may be incorporated in a set of tiles on a building surface (70 fig 8) such as a roof or wall. The tile set further includes a photovoltaic cell within an externally identical chassis. The chassis of the photovoltaic tile (90 fig 8) may also include an airflow hole. The solar tile set may have a dimension that is a multiple of the other tiles in the tile set (2 fig 8). The space below the solar tile may include a heating space (35 fig 4) that includes a heating surface (36 fig 4) treated for maximising solar absorption. The heating surface may be in conductive communication with a pipe (37 fig 4) through which water flows. The heated water may be used to add heat to a domestic hot water system. |
